Have a luxury, loving break in Fuerteventura

The Canary Islands is the perfect destination for couples looking to relax, not least of all because this part of Spain has an annual average temperature of 22 degrees C and receives more sunlight than anywhere else in Europe. For a really luxurious getaway, however it is worth taking a break to Fuerteventura.

In doing so, you will have ample opportunity to soak up amazing natural landscapes with your partner (the island is a declared UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) where you can forget all about the stress of life back home and spend some precious time together. Embarking on a walk through some of Fuerteventura's national parks and reserves is a great way in which to do this, with a stroll in the Cuchillos de Vigan Natural Park giving you the chance to observe the island's dramatic volcanic scenery. You can also see some terrific wildlife, including the Berber falcon, and the fossilised remains of aquatic creatures, so there will be plenty to catch your interest.

Head to the northern tip of the island and you can explore the Corralejo Natural Park. This reserve features a large expanse of dunes, thus offering lots of space for you and your loved one to spread out a towel and relax. Make sure that you keep an eye out for the local flora, which includes the Canarian bean-caper and shrubby sea-blite.

Alternatively, you might want to visit Betancuria. Located on the eastern shore of Fuerteventura, this beautiful park contains a diverse range of terrain, including green valleys and rocky ravines, so there will be plenty of natural wonders to catch your eye. The reserve is also a designated protective area for birds, meaning you can expect to see some interesting species too.

Corralejo also contains a wealth of fabulous beaches, among them Corralejo Viejo. Head to this coastal stretch and you will come across a 195 m expanse of white sand that is simply perfect for sunbathing and taking in views of the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. Muelle Chico is another top beach to spend some time at, although it is slightly smaller than Corralejo Viejo, and is set in a lovely fishing village.

El Dormidero and El Burro are two more sandy stretches well worth visiting, with the latter a good place to visit for those who are hoping to incorporate some sports into a luxury romantic break. At this beach, you will discover great conditions for pursuits such as kitesurfing and surfing.

After a morning spent soaking up the sun at the beach, you can cool yourself down by having a treatment or two at one of Fuerteventura's many spas. Although these facilities are often located within luxury hotels you don't necessarily have to be a guest to use them.

These are ideal places for a spot of pampering, with everything from seaweed wraps to facials and invigorating massages on offer. The adults-only Corralejo Bay Barcelo is a perfect location for couples who want to feel refreshed and revitalised.

While taking part in all of the above will go some way towards creating a chic romantic getaway in Fuerteventura, it is also worth bearing in mind that the island contains a fantastic range of high-end accommodation. Rent a Corralejo luxury villa from a company like Premier Holidays, and you'll have access to facilities such as a heated pool, modern kitchen, barbecue and private terrace so you can enjoy a cosy evening in with your partner after a day spent exploring this beautiful sunny island.

Ask someone what their image of the perfect beach is and they're likely to say 'crystal clear waters' and 'flawless white sand'. To be fair, you're likely to find this on Tenerife, however all is not as it seems - the white sand is actually imported from Africa in order to create picture-perfect scenery.
