Top cultural spots you must visit in Tuscany

When you choose to rent a holiday villa in Italy, you know you're in for a trip bursting with culture. After all, this is the country that gave us Leonardo da Vinci and the Roman Empire. However, what are the top sites to visit in Tuscany if you want to go sightseeing?

Luckily, the region is home to a wealth of iconic attractions, so if you've booked private villas in Tuscany, you won't have to travel far to reach them. Here are three of our favourites.

Florence

The capital of Tuscany and one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, Florence is among the greatest iconic cultural attractions in the world. It's home to renowned works of art and architecture, while it's also a great place to sample some delicious Tuscan cuisine.

Indeed, there's so much to see and do here you'll find it tough to fit it all in, although paying a visit to the Duomo di Firenze is a must. This cathedral is an incredible feat of engineering and a beautiful sight to behold.

Round off your day by ordering a traditional Florentine steak at one of the restaurants - it's simply mouth-watering.

Pisa

Just as famous as Florence, Pisa also has its fair share of iconic cultural attractions. What you may not know is that they are all incorporated within the Piazza dei Miracoli - or Field of Miracles - a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Of course, the leaning bell tower is the best known attraction, and as well as marvelling at it from the ground - it really does slant at quite an angle - you can also climb it to enjoy views across the city. Meanwhile, housed within the neighbouring Duomo di Pisa are some stunning works of art.

Siena

This is a great example of a medieval Tuscan town and the beautiful red-roofed buildings make for a truly attractive sight.

You may have heard of this city because of the Palio Horse Races. These thrilling events take place in July and August and see brave participants ride bareback around the narrow streets. It takes place in the evening but the day is marked by celebratory events and processions.

Grab a table at one of the cafes that faces out on to the Piazza del Campo and watch the world go by. Usually the piazzas in Italy are square, but this one makes for an interesting sight as it is shaped like a shell.
