A guide to the most exclusive beach resorts of the Mediterranean

Thursday, 14 June 2014 3:05 PM

The Mediterranean has long been a playground for the rich and famous, inducing images of shaded eyed celebrities zipping around on their private yachts, sitting in stylish cafes with cups of espresso, or showing off their latest styles on the beach. But the Mediterranean also brings to mind another world, of quaint winding cobblestone streets, cute squares encircled with lemon groves, and romantic architecture - ensuring they never lose their charm and remain exclusive and luxurious.

St Tropez, France
Situated along France’s beautiful Côte d’Azur, St Tropez has long been a popular holiday spot with celebrities and just recently Beyonce, J-Z and new baby Blue Ivy, were seen holidaying here. But while it may a popular place for the rich and famous, this attractive town, full of crimson and ochre town houses lining the stylish marina, is still full of local charm with vibrant market places and picturesque village streets.

Cannes, France
And staying on the Côte d’Azur we head to the star studded resort of Cannes, home of the famous Cannes Film Festival. Chic boutiques and palatial-style hotels line the boulevards, while sun-shaded beauties sit in cafes along the palm-lined promenade. Anyone who’s anyone in the world of celebs has stayed here, and it’s not just golden-hued for the festival either, Cannes makes for a chic style holiday whatever the time of year. It’s swanky and elegant, yet charismatic and rleaxing.

Portofino, Italy
Liguria, on the Italian Riviera is home to many exclusive Italian resorts. Popular in Hollywood golden age of the fifties, Portofino was a favourite with the likes of Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, Brigitte Bardot and Humphrey Bogart. Gliding into the small port by private yacht watching the huddle of pretty pink and yellow buildings scattered across the emerald green hillside, one can certainly see what attracted them. Today, Portofino is full of designer boutiques, exclusive 5-star resorts and glitzy restaurants, but is still just as alluring as it was back then. Today, the small town attracts the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Kylie Minogue and Blake Lively.

Lake Como, Italy
If you have money, then the posh resorts around northern Italy’s Lake Como are just the place. Here, it’s all about eating delicious gourmet Italian cuisine and sitting on balconies admiring the beautiful views, while others sit and admire you. Quaint and beautiful with cobblestoned streets and leafy piazzas, the resorts of Lake Como; Bellagio, Menaggio, Tremezzo, Cadenabbia and Lenno have managed to retain their rustic nature, which is perhaps why they have stayed so popular. And of course, this place isn’t devoid of celebs either; George Clooney even has a home here.

Mallorca, Spain
In recent years Mallorca has fully established itself as a luxurious sophisticated destination, instead of just a place to party away in tacky nightclubs on a hen weekend. Away from the package resorts, the island is full of attractive villages surrounded by olive and almond trees and small boutique hotels scatter the island. This is the place for a quiet and peaceful getaway, where you can while away in luxury. The secret is out on Mallorca, so make sure you’re hot on the heels of celebs who already love it there.

Marbella, Spain
The famous Spanish chic resort of Marbella is perhaps not as exclusive as it once was, but still remains a luxurious favourite, with sunny warm weather year round, a marina constantly filled with stylish yachts and sleek 5-star hotels, this is a place to party in style.
