Relax in luxury on a Bay of Naples sailing holiday

Thursday, 3 November 2013 1:05 PM

Sailing holidays in exotic charter destinations have long been the epitome of luxury - and one ideal location for this type of trip is the Bay of Naples in western Italy.

This spot is especially perfect when it comes to sailing holidays in Italy thanks to the short distances between the islands scattered across the Tyrrhenian Sea, as well as the pleasantly gentle winds and the unlikelihood of tidal and wind currents affecting visitors' journeys.

There's plenty to see and do as you make your way from your base on Procida Island to the other isles in the area over the course of a week or longer, as part of either a bareboat or luxury crewed charter. Here are just a few highlights to look out for.

Capri

The island of Capri is perhaps most well-known for attracting high-profile holidaymakers you might recognise from the movies or TV.

This should come as no surprise when you call at the destination - its stunning natural beauty, historic attractions and temperate climate combined with world-class restaurants and beautiful beaches make Capri the ideal stop on a luxury sailing holiday in Italy.

Sample the local cuisine and shop until you drop in bustling Capri Town before heading off on a sightseeing tour of Villa Jovis, the Charterhouse of San Giacomo and the Phoenician Steps to make the most of your time here.

Ischia

Lush, green Ischia is famous for its hot springs, which are the result of the island's status as an extinct volcano.

The beaches here are well worth a visit - imagine tasting the local food at a lunch by the sea, before reclining on the sand and then swimming in the fantastically warm waters.

Attractions of note on Ischia include its thermal gardens - particularly the Poseidon Garden in Forio and Lacco Ameno's Negombo - as well as the Archaeological Museum of Pithecusae, the Museum of the Sea and Castello d'Ischia, which is a 15th century castle ideal for learning all about local history.

Ponza

Rugged Ponza is perfect for exploring picturesque beaches and secluded coves and taking in spectacular views from its highest point.

Make sure you spend some time snorkelling or diving in the island's famous ocean caves for the ultimate holiday experience here, and check out the unique natural stone arch of Arco Naturale.

Visit the restaurants and shops in Porto di Ponza and relax by the sea between Faraglioni and Capo Bosco and between Cala di Feola and Cala dell'Aqua for an onshore excursion to remember.

Naples

Back on the mainland, the city of Naples has much to offer in terms of sights and activities at either the beginning or the end of your luxury travel experience.

There are four castles to visit if you want to learn about local history - Castello dell'Ovo, Castel Nuovo, Castel Capuano and Castel Sant'Elmo.

Other points of interest include the Chapel of St Gennaro's Treasure, the cathedral and the Capodimonte Museum and National Galleries, where you can view works by the likes of Caravaggio, Raffaello and Tiziano, among many other famous artists.

You can also use Naples as a base from which to visit Pompeii, which was buried in ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD and lay undiscovered until 1748.

A sailing holiday in the Bay of Naples is sure to be the luxury travel experience of a lifetime - so consider this destination if you want plenty of sun, sea and culture on your next getaway.
