Enjoy chic shopping in Marbella

Thursday, 2 August 2014 4:02 PM

Marbella has long been a popular spot for holidaymakers seeking a chic break where they can relax in the sun. It is also, however, a fantastic place for those wanting to do some shopping. Whether you're hoping to pick up some souvenirs for loved ones or buy yourself a whole new wardrobe, there is plenty of scope to splash some cash.

Given that the southern Spanish city is widely to be considered a holiday hotspot for the rich and famous, as well as being a major port for luxury yachts, it should be little surprise it is home to dozens of designer boutiques.

There are also plenty of high street stores and independent markets, the latter being perfect if you're looking for something a little different. No matter what you're after, following a day scouring the shops you ought to find you can return to your luxury Marbella villa with several bags in hand.

A trip to Puerto Banus will certainly give you the opportunity to give your credit card a healthy workout. While the marina complex is packed with hundreds of yachts, it's likely to be the wealth of luxury stores here that really catch your eye.

Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo and Gucci are just some of the big names that have outlets on the waterfront, where you can pick up everything from ladies' accessories to smart two-piece suits. With Marbella's pleasant sunshine, however, it might be a good idea to purchase some designer sunglasses to shield your eyes from the rays.

If you find the hot sun a little too much to bear, or in the unlikely event there is a sudden downpour, head to the La Canada Shopping Centre. As you take shelter from the weather, make sure you check out the dozens of stores and food outlets. Here, you'll find a wide range of shops, including familiar brands like Marks & Spencer, Ted Baker and Zara, so you can easily spend an entire day browsing and buying.

Alternatively, you can visit the El Corte Ingles department store. Spread over five levels and featuring a selection of designer concessions, including Karen Millen, this shopping emporium is bound to have something for you, whether you are interested in picking up designer apparel or the latest electrical appliances.

At the nearby Antonio Banderas Square, a public space named after the famous Spanish actor, you can take a breather from shopping and enjoy a relaxing drink at the nearby cafe. Here, you'll also find an outdoor play area that includes a trampoline and air hockey table, an ideal destination for your kids to burn off some energy.

If you are interested in seeing what Marbella's independent retailers have to offer, check out the street market held every Saturday morning in Puerto Banus and Nueva Andalucia. The stalls here sell everything from leather goods and antiques to fruit and fresh flowers, so it is a great place to pick up stylish, locally-made souvenirs, as well as any essentials that you may need for your villa.

As Spain is one of the world's leading producers of extra-virgin olive oil, it's worth spending a little time browsing Marbella's shops for the ingredient. Head to the D Oliva store, situated in the old town district, and you can pick up a wide variety of olive oils. A range of other regionally-sourced products, such as balsamic vinegars and artisan marmalades, are also sold here. Not only are these great gifts to take home, but they can be used to whip up fantastic meals in your holiday villa.

Quirky luxury hotels - A Room for London

Though not technically a hotel, this room could possibly have the best view in the whole of London. When you picture this you’re probably imagining an exclusive pent house suite on top of some iconic building, not a wooden boat perched precariously on top of the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre, as if left there by retreating floods.
