Antigua dream holiday itinerary

Friday, 9 August 2015 3:12 PM

Antigua is a dream holiday destination, a tropical Caribbean island paradise with sugar-sand beaches fringed by palms, a unique history and culture and of course many activities to choose from. Here’s an idea for a dream holiday itinerary for a dream destination.

Day 1
Arrive and settle into your hotel. If you’re looking for great Caribbean holiday deals and plenty of luxury, then Blue Waters Resort is a good choice of accommodation on the island. Located on the northern tip of the island in an enviable location on Soldier’s Bay, the resort provides luxurious sea-view suites and villas, as well as a spa and variety of excellent dining options. After checking in, spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the pool or on the idyllic white powder beach with a Caribbean rum cocktail.

Day 2
Go for a morning snorkel - the waters around Antigua are well known for their beautiful coral reefs and no holiday itinerary around the island would be complete without viewing them. One of the best places for snorkelling is the Cades Reef which is located offshore of Cades Bay on the southern side of the island. There are many tour operators and diving companies that can take you out there on excursions. Another good place for snorkelling just off the beach is Hawksbill Beach, located on the Five Islands Peninsula. End the day with a relaxing massage or treatment back at your hotel or a sunset cruise.

Day 3
Go for a sailing lesson - The Caribbean is well known for its excellent sailing conditions with its calm waters and a consistent breeze, making it one the best places to learn how to sail too. Choose from many of the boat charter or rental companies around the island.

Day 4
Ask your hotel for a packed picnic and head out to Dickenson Bay. Just offshore lies the tropical paradise of Prickly Pear Island - an uninhabited island with soft sandy beaches and palms perfect for romantic picnics. Arrange with one of the locals to take you out there on their boat, they frequently do this for visitors who want to see the island. After your picnic and time exploring the island, head to the historic Nelson’s Dockyard, which is also a national park. Just before dusk, hike up to Shirley Heights where you’ll get spectacular views over the island and bay. This is also where the locals come to gather for traditional Caribbean barbecues and entertainment of steel drum bands.

Day 5
Dive the Andes shipwreck, one of best shipwrecks in the area, which sank in 1905. The wreck is home to many types of wildlife, from tiny iridescent tropical fish to giant barracudas. If you don’t have your PADI certificate yet, go for a dive lesson, as there are many dive centres around the island that offer them. And, why not end the day with a romantic horse ride down the beach, just in time for sunset?

Day 6
Discover the Antiguan rainforest by whizzing through the tree canopy on a series of zip lines suspended in the air, with Antigua Rainforest Zip Line Tours. It’s likely you’ll spot some of Antigua’s 186 species of birds along the way, which include hummingbirds and kingfishers.
Spend the afternoon browsing the boutiques and shops around St John’s area.

Day 7
Enjoy one of Antigua’s stunning tropical beaches one last time before your departure. There are in fact 365 of them in total so you’ll be spoilt for choice. Some of the best are Hawksbill Beach, Turner’s Beach and Half Moon Bay.
